On Saturday, December 15 at 1pm, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art presents the launch of Sylvia Matas’s new bookwork A Reversal of Windsat Blinkers Holiday Sale.* We hope you take this opportunity to meet the artist, and bring home an ethereal work of visual poetics.
A Reversal of Winds brings together images and texts that point to unrealized futures and residue of past worlds that co-exist within the present. The existence of people is peripheral. They enter the book indirectly through traces they’ve left: a path in the snow, billows of smoke, the remains of built environments…
Sylvia Matas is an interdisciplinary artist from Winnipeg, Canada whose work is characterized by an inquiry into the grey area between reality and perception, through an exploration of unexplained phenomena, our relationship with nature, and altered experiences of time and space. She received a Masters of Fine Arts from the Chelsea College in London, England (2008). Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues in Winnipeg such as The Winnipeg Art Gallery, Gallery 1C03, Lantern, Lisa Kehler Art + Projects; and in Canada and abroad at the Maclaren Art Centre, Barrie, ON; Truck Contemporary Art, Calgary; Útúrdúr, Reykjavik; the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, MKG127, Toronto and Mercer Union, Toronto. Her work is currently on view at Plug In ICA as part of Days of Reading: beyond this state of affairs.
